Ford revealed the Raptor performance version of the Ranger pickup. While Ford debuted the U.S. version of the Ranger in Detroit in January, it merely hinted that the Ranger Raptor could make its way to our shores. With the launch of the Ford Edge ST, though, it appeared that the automaker could be expanding its performance lineup to include SUVs. Now, it appears that Ford is mulling a Raptor version of the Ranger-based Everest SUV, according to Australian website Drive.Ford's global performance chief engineer Jamal Hameedi said that there was "no reason" not to build an Everest Raptor. "The first F-150 Raptor was way beyond our wildest dreams in terms of success, and that success spawned a Ranger Raptor," he told Drive. An SUV does pose a challenge due to packaging, though, he said. "To do an SUV is a little more difficult because you have to figure out how to deal with the rear suspension."Drive also talked to Ford Australia product communications manager Damion Smy, who said that … [Read more...] about Ford mulls Everest Raptor, more performance SUVs
reports of a BMW M2 Competition on the way, bolstered, Sasquatch-like, with a snippet of a spy shot. The brand followers at Bimmerpost now have photographic and VIN support for the model that will replace the current M2, not be sold alongside it. The 365-horsepower M2 is already one of our favorite cars, the M2 Competition should press our buttons even harder with 405-hp.The extra stallions come with a switch from the 3.0-liter, single-turbo, six-cylinder N55 engine to a detuned version of the 3.0-liter, twin-turbo S55 inline-six from the M3 and M4. The S55 upgrades the N55 with items like stronger pistons and a lightweight crankshaft. In those larger M sedans, the S55 makes 425 hp in standard guise, 444 hp in Competition spec. A seven-speed M-DCT and a six-speed manual constitute the new M2's shifting options.Based on that single spy shot, a wider grille, larger front intakes, and re-sculpted side mirror housings factor into the design changes. Two new exterior hues, Silver Hockenheim … [Read more...] about BMW M2 Competition with 405 hp on the way, to debut in Beijing
The next Toyota Supra is still coming -- we just don't know when or what, exactly, it'll be like. So far, we’re sure that it’ll share a powertrain with its co-developed BMW Z4 sibling -- but that’s about it. Of course, we’ve seen spy shots and renderings, so we’ve got a good idea of what it’s going to look like when it hits the street, but now Japan’s Best Car magazine might have leaked all the numbers necessary to get a concrete idea of what the Supra will be.According to the folks at the MkV Supra forums, who translated the magazine’s Japanese copy, the next Supra will have a 97.2-inch wheelbase, be 172.4 inches long, 73-inches wide and 50.8-inches tall. That makes it about 5.4 inches shorter in total length and one inch taller road-to-roof than the previous-generation Supra. Throttle-Back Thursday: The Toyota Celica Supra is here...but what, exactly, is it? With the new Toyota Supra coming our way...eventually, … [Read more...] about Did Toyota Supra specs just leak from a Japanese car magazine?
five-year history of posting scoops, has leaked more secrets on the coming Toyota Supra. Instead of clarifying what we can expect from Toyota's rebooted hero car, these new rumors confuse the issue — and if they're true, the new Supra gets further away from the thrill of the old Supra every time we hear about it.For starters, ynguldyn says the coupe "will be Toyota in name and body design only." We already knew that the Supra's interior came bundled from the BMW parts bin, but now we're told that the Supra will use the "same options, same colors, same interior materials." What's more, some of those colors will also come from the BMW bin, and hark back to near the time the last Supra disappeared: Glacier Silver, Atacama Yellow, and Crimson Red, anyone?Last we heard on Supra engine choices, Autocar reported there'd be one engine, an inline-six, in four states of tune. The Bimmerpost thread counters that, saying the Supra will get three engines — two four-cylinders and a … [Read more...] about Toyota Supra to be little more than a rebodied BMW Z4?
Porsche Boxster Spyder. First came hearsay of a flat-six going into the special edition of a model line known for its turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Then came tattling that the flat-six in question was the naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter from the 911 GT3. A couple of weeks ago we wrote "we'd be surprised if Porsche packed anything other than a turbocharged flat-four under the skin." But Autocar has a new report that, indeed, a downtuned version of the 500-horsepower 4.0-liter from the GT3's rump will move to the Boxster Spyder's midsection. The Autocar piece follows a Wheels magazine article from last November, and the prediction isn't outrageous. When Car and Driver reviewed the last Boxster Spyder, it wrote, "the hand-me-down six comes from the older 911 Carrera S, not to be confused with the new turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six that powers the refreshed 911." If we can believe a recent report from Automobile about the 992-series 911 due later this year, the same thing is … [Read more...] about Porsche Boxster Spyder to get GT3’s 4.0-liter flat six?
Honda recently renewed its U.S. trademark for the name "CDX," which the Japanese carmaker first applied for in 2015. Back then, observers expected the name to apply to an Acura version of the Honda HR-V, and they were right — but no one expected the CDX would go on sale only in China, in 2016.For the past two years, the U.S. auto media has speculated on whether the CDX will ever make it here."(We) have our R&D guys looking into the possibility," group VP of Acura U.S. Jon Ikeda told Wards Auto last April about the CDX. However, he went on to note that it's not as simple as just shipping it over due to regulation differences between China and the United States. The trademark application doesn't mean a green light, but it shows Honda's at least leaving the door open to the prospect. The Chinese-market CDX is a Honda HR-V after a wardrobe change. The only engine option is the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from the Civic, CR-V, and Accord, with 179 horsepower and 177 … [Read more...] about Honda renews trademark for Acura CDX compact crossover
Ford swapped the Explorer's ladder rails for a unibody eight years ago, sales have explored high-altitude territory again. The Explorer was the 15th-best-selling vehicle last year, with 238,056 units moved, and received the slightest of updates for 2018 because sometimes it's best to just let a roaring fire burn. Bigger things will apparently come next year, though, when the 2020 Ford Explorer begins production at Ford's Chicago Assembly Planet. The Truth About Cars reports that not only will the mid-sized SUV move to a new, modular, rear-drive platform, but it'll get a hot ST version to pair with the recently released Edge ST.TTAC broke the news about the platform switch four years ago. The return to rear-wheel drive would take the Explorer back to its roots; the first four Explorer generations were truck-based, rear-drive haulers. The new CD6 architecture is said to be a big chunk of the $5 billion Ford invested in Lincoln, and it works for front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive … [Read more...] about 2020 Ford Explorer to go RWD, get 400-hp ST version

Car magazine's section on Lexus in the rundown of Geneva Motor Show reveals: "Baby SUV not yet confirmed, but word is that a Lexus small crossover based on UX concept is due." Actually, there's a tad more than hearsay to add to that line: Lexus International EVP Yoshihiro Sawa said one year ago that the carmaker already approved a production version of the UX, and that it is "not so far away."The trail goes cold there, though, when trying to divine what a civilian UX would look like. The production model should borrow its platform and some organs from the Toyota C-HR, which rides on the TNGA bones also shared with the Prius. Yet the UX concept, shown at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, warped so many dimensions it belongs in the coming Avatar sequels or a "Time Bandit" reboot. Chapeau to the designers for compressing so much action in so little space; at 173.2 inches long, 74.8 inches wide, and 59.8 inches tall, on a 103.9-inch wheelbase, the UX concept was a smidge larger than an Audi Q3, a … [Read more...] about Lexus compact crossover based on the UX could debut in Geneva
Volvo showed off the concept that previewed the XC40, it also unveiled a hatchback sedan called Concept 40.2. Later in the year, it announced it would electrify every model and introduce full EVs. Now, a report from Autocar claims that Volvo's first all-electric vehicle will be a standalone model based on Concept 40.2, and will arrive in 2019.The car, which will use Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, will also borrow the 40-series nomenclature. Volvo R&D head Henrik Green told Autocar that the new EV will have a target range of about 310 miles, considerably more than the concept's 217-mile driving range. "It feels like every month we are updating the requirement," said Green, "trying to add new competitive edges to the car because the technology is moving so fast now on a lot of areas, so it's much more of a moving target."Volvo will offer modular batteries with different ranges, along with different electric motors, to offer customers versions at different price … [Read more...] about Volvo’s first EV will be a hatchback shooting for 310-mile range
