Toyota has officially teased the upcoming Supra ahead of its global debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Although the manufacturer has not yet confirmed the name of the new car, the press release mentions “The Legend Returns”. Hence, there’s no doubting that the car will be nothing but a Supra. Wondering why the word ‘Legend’ is synonymous with the Supra? Read on. Initially, the Supra was not designed for outright performance as it was heavy and had just about adequate power. But things changed with the launch of the Supra Turbo in 1987. Soon, the Supra started to gain reputation for the performance it offered in the sports car segment. It was powered by a 3.0-litre, straight-six petrol engine which produced 230PS of power. It didn’t stop there. In 1993, Toyota launched the Mark IV Supra, or the A80. The fourth-gen Supra was completely redesigned as Toyota wanted the sports car to be a serious high-performance car. It now featured a more rounded … [Read more...] about 2018 Toyota Supra Teased Ahead Of Geneva Motor Show Debut
Did you hear that? That was the sound of millions of Supra enthusiasts crying out in terror. Don’t worry Supra fans, the sun will come out tomorrow, and likely the day after that, but at some point in 2017, it may just go away forever, because that’s when BMW is planning on rolling out the new 2018 Supra. Wait, did I say BMW? Yep, and sorry to say, but I meant to. Though we pretty much already knew BMW would be partnering with Toyota a bit on the Supra comeback, we didn’t realize just how much they’d be involved. Well, now we do, since word has leaked out to Car and Driver about how Toyota and BMW are divvying up the RWD performance coupe. According to the magazine, Toyota will provide the new Supra’s body, but the Bavarians will be contributing the turbocharged, inline 6-cylinder engine and the rear-drive chassis. Gasp. It stings, don’t it? If you want an idea of what the car will look like, take a peak at Toyota’s FT-1 concept … [Read more...] about Could BMW Supra Pave Way for BMW Lexus?
► BMW-Toyota joint sports car project ► Replacement for the BMW Z4 ► BMW will be convertible, Toyota a coupe Look what we've spotted out testing again! This might be the 100th time we've seen the next-generation Z4 roadster, but this is our first look at the production lights of BMW's new roadster. Both the head and rear lights are lifted entirely from the Z4 Concept that was first shown at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and then the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. Looking closely at the front end, it looks as if the double-stacked headlights have remained from the concept car, even if the upper lamps have been hidden by translucent covers. At the rear, the light clusters have quite a fluid shape to them, much like the i8 plug-in sports car.CAR talked to Adrian van Hooydonk at the 2017 Frankfurt show, and he said 'in our new form lanuguage, we want to make cars cleaner and have sharper lines. With the Z4, it's very different … [Read more...] about Four-eyed roadster: latest 2018 BMW Z4 spy shots show production lights
i3: On sale since 2014, this electric hatchback is due to receive an update for 2018 with lightly revised aesthetics and the latest BMW interior equipment. A larger-capacity, 33.0-kWh battery was made available for 2017, and reports point to a more performance-oriented version joining the lineup next year with a stronger electric motor and revised suspension. i8: As with the i3, we expect an update for BMW’s exotic sci-fi hybrid sports car early next year and the introduction of a topless variant. Both coupe and droptop plug-ins are likely to sport revised styling inside and out as well as the latest iDrive 6.0 interface. A stronger battery pack and electric motor will allow for greater range and a boost in total power from the current 357 horses. The gas-burning component of the hybrid powertrain—a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-three—goes unchanged. M4: Beyond some small trim changes to the M4, there is the addition of the CS model, which slots between … [Read more...] about New Cars for 2018: BMW
Some interesting details about both the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra emerged from an internal BMW coding sheet revealed at supramkv.com, which looks to be legit. The Z4 and the Supra are sister models, developed in close collaboration, and prototypes are a frequent sight around Munich of late. BMW has been releasing teaser images of a concept version of its new roadster (above), a vehicle it plans to display at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The BMW Z4, slated for a mid-2018 launch, will be rear-wheel drive only and will come with either a four- or a six-cylinder engine. The entry-level model for the U.S. is the Z4 sDrive 30i, powered by a turbocharged four that we believe will make about 250 horsepower. Above that, BMW will offer the Z4 M40i, propelled by a 3.0-liter inline-six that we expect to make about 360 horsepower. The great news is that both BMW models will be available with a manual transmission as well as the inevitable automatic.Toyota to Show Supra … [Read more...] about Yes! Japan’s signature auto show, the Tokyo auto show, was a must-see extravaganza of the country’s future sports-car ideas and eccentric concept cars throughout the 1990s. Then, as the Shanghai and Beijing auto shows grew in prominence and Korean cars started eating into Japan’s global market share, the Tokyo event lost its luster, dropping to second-tier status on the international calendar of car shows. And there it has stayed for the past decade. (It doesn’t help that the show is held only every other year.) But that won’t be the case in 2017, in large part because of one debut: the Toyota Supra concept. The Supra concept leads a show-car trio from Toyota that also will include, according to the Japanese magazine Best Car, Toyota’s S-FR and Corolla GTI concepts. We first saw the next-generation Supra’s design direction when the company unveiled its FT-1 concept in January 2014, and the final product will … [Read more...] about Toyota to Show Supra Concept in October (Plus Two More Sports Concepts)
What It Is The FT-1 concept that hints at what may be Toyota’s next sports car. It will likely come as both a coupe and a convertible, and it may be called the Supra, the 2000GT, or something new, like the Toyota Fluminous. We just made that last one up. Why It Matters Despite company president Akio Toyoda waxing poetic about building more passionate cars, and Toyota spending big to race prototypes at Le Mans, it has nothing in the cupboard for enthusiasts that is priced under 50 large except for the Subaru-sourced Scion FR-S. This “Supra” might be the product of a Toyota-BMW partnership—a partnership that would lend credibility to Toyota’s claimed passion for passion and save both companies a pile. Platform Aligning BMW’s and Toyota’s brand positions will be tricky, but the likeliest crossover point is the BMW Z4 replacement, which could come in just low enough for this Toyota not to blunder into … [Read more...] about 2018 Toyota Sports Car: Don’t Call It a Supra—On Second Thought . . .
You can see why Toyota and BMW would choose the code name “Silk Road” to describe their collaborative effort to build a new generation of sports cars. East meets West and all that. We will forgive the companies the minor historical inaccuracy—the Silk Road trade route never extended to Japan or Germany—because we greatly prefer sports cars to silk. And this alliance will result in the next BMW Z4 and the return of Toyota’s long-lost Supra.According to leaks out of Germany, the Supra coupe will appear in two years as a 2018 model. Why would the Germans be leaking Supra details? Because underneath the Toyota-specific body will be mounted a turbocharged inline-six BMW engine. And, if that’s not enough sacrilege, the coupe’s rear-drive chassis will be developed largely by BMW, too.So what will Toyota contribute to the party, other than the body? Well, money, for one. Toyota also will let BMW in on some of its expertise in inexpensive hybrid … [Read more...] about Der Supra: East Meets West in the Toyota/BMW Sports-Car Partnership
The BMW Z4 has reached the end of its life cycle, which means it’s time for a replacement, and Toyota inexplicably forgot to conceive a successor to the iconic Supra when that model was discontinued a decade and a half ago. It’s good, then, that both of the automakers have teamed up on new sports cars—but they won’t exactly be Japanese or German.BMW and Toyota have remained admirably officially silent on the progress of their joint venture, but there have been looser lips at Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung, which has reported that both the Z4 replacement and the reborn Supra will be built by the Canadian-owned Magna Steyr operation near Graz. (There, the cars will use capacity once assigned to the Mini coupe, Paceman, and Countryman; the first two models are dead, while Countryman production will move to the Netherlands in its next generation.) The paper insists about 60,000 of the two-door sports cars will begin rolling … [Read more...] about Toyota Supra and BMW Z5: Everything We Know
It’s no secret that Toyota and BMW are collaborating on a sports car. While we’ve long suspected that this new car will be the spiritual successor to the beloved Supra, we weren’t sure if the Japanese/German hybrid would actually bear that name. Last week, though, the website supramkv.com turned up more evidence that the Supra nameplate will make its glorious return to the Toyota stable, as Toyota trademarked the name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.Last sold in the U.S. in 1998, the Supra—particularly the final 1993–1998 generation (above)—is viewed as a high-water mark in Toyota’s history. For years, Toyota has teased us with promises of the vehicle’s return, showing off the gasoline-electric hybrid FT-HS concept car in Detroit in 2007 and most recently teasing the low-slung Toyota FT-1 sports car concept (below) in 2014.World’s Quickest Import: Watch a Supra Blast a 6.05-Second, 241-mph … [Read more...] about Supra Man: Toyota Trademarks Iconic Sports Car Name in Europe
