Just before the 2012 Geneva Motor Show kicked off, Audi unveiled its third generation A3. The car is 80 kg lighter than the previous generation A3 and is the first Volkswagen Group product based on the new MQB platform - a new front-wheel driven architecture that can be the base for cars ranging from the Polo to the Passat and everything in between. The MQB platform is likely to be more cost effective and will reduce inventory as well.Audi will first launch the A3 with two TFSI powerplants - a 121 bhp 1.4-litre engine and a 178 bhp 1.8-litre engine too. The 1.8-litre engine comes mated to a seven speed twin-clutch S-tronic transmission, while the other engine comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. Audi will also launch a 1.6 TDI engine (also with a six-speed gearbox) that boasts fuel consumption of 74.3 mpg and CO2 figures of 99g/km. There will also be a Quattro four-wheel drive version of the A3. While the new A3 looks sharper than the earlier version on the outside, the … [Read more...] about 2012 Geneva Motor Show – New Audi A3 revealed

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the much-awaited A-Class just ahead of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and boy is it a looker. The A-Class looks even slicker and swankier than the concept photos and leaked images that we'd been treated to, what with the diamond grille and swanky interiors too (yes, it even comes with carbon fibre dashboard insets). The A-Class will come powered by four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that range from 1.6 litre to 2.0-litres. All engine options feature direct inject injection, are turbocharged and also have start-stop functions as standard. The tranny options are six-speed manuals or a seven-speed DSG. Mercedes-Benz will launch the A-Class with different variants - some much finer looking than others, like the one that looks like the A-Class Fuel Cell concept. So when is the A-Class likely to head to India? Mercedes-Benz has said they will bring it to the country in 2013. And the car is likely to be priced around the Rs 20 to 25 lakh bracket. … [Read more...] about 2012 Geneva Motor Show – Mercedes-Benz A-Class unveiled!
Ford has launched its new mini-MPV, the B-Max, at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. This compact MPV revels in its clever utilisation of interior space and for once, Ford has also thought about how you're going to cram all your things into it too. Ford has a very unique solution — eliminate the B-pillar altogether. Once you slide open the rear doors, you’re greeted with a very large opening to cram all your things inside. In fact, the opening created by this design is about 1.8 metres wide.An interesting tidbit to note is that the concept car Ford displayed last year comes in at a length of 4.04 metres. It's possible that the one that makes it here could clock in at under four metres, allowing for an excise duty cut. If it ends up being a sub-four metre MPV, then a larger variant may come our way in the future, which could seat seven people and possibly take on the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The boot is rated at 397 litres, which can be expanded to over 1,000 … [Read more...] about 2012 Geneva Motor Show – Ford B-Max launched
How do you make a Mini van without making it a minivan? Well, it's quite simply actually - take a box-stock Mini Clubman, trash the rear seats, install a honeycomb partition behind the drivers, add a few practical touches here and there and then grab a cuppa because you're practically done. That's exactly how the Clubvan concept came to life and looking at the booming market for such configurations, it's no wonder that this Mini looks very production ready, primed to hit the marketplace soon.To be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the Clubvan is a more premium offering in a market segment that typically sticks to bare-basics. They say that the Clubvan will retain the driving fun of a Mini while adding practicability and load-carrying capacity thanks to the flat floor at the back. Mini also adds that this vehicle will mostly be targeted at people who need transport space but aren't willing to compromise on style - like art gallery owners, fashion designers and … [Read more...] about Geneva Motor Show preview – Mini Clubvan Concept
The Geneva motor show is generally considered to be one of the most important international motor shows on the calendar with a lot of automakers looking to launch or unveil their new models there. Here's a short list of what to expect there this year. Take one small hatchback, give it a high-revving small engine, keep the weight as low as possible and you end up with a recipe for a fun hot-hatch. That's exactly what Peugeot did with the 205 GTi and that's what this new 208 GTi concept aims to do too. It's got all the styling cues to set it apart from the normal 208 all right, There's a French flag (the union jack if you're buying in the UK) on the front bumper, aluminium GTi badges all around and large wheels with red brake calipers showing through. Providing the go for this car is a 1.6-litre engine, which doesn't seem like much now, but couple that with the light weight of the car and a slick shifting six-speed gearbox and you've got yourself a fun hatch. The sporty cues … [Read more...] about Geneva motor show preview
If the concepts and production prototypes at the Auto Expo are anything to go by, this is looking more and more like the year of the MUV/MPV. Take this new Ford, to be shown at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show, for example. The B-Max concept was first shown at last year’s Geneva show and this time a production version will make it there. Ford plans on bringing in eight new models to India by 2015, the new Fiesta and EcoSport models being the first and second models in this barrage. This B-Max may well be the third one to make it in.This compact MPV revels in its clever utilisation of interior space and for once, Ford has also thought about how you're going to cram all your things into it too. Ford has a very unique solution — eliminate the B-pillar altogether. Once you slide open the rear doors, you’re greeted with a very large opening to cram all your things inside. Porsche is all set to launch the new Panamera S Hybrid. And the grand unveiling of the car will happen at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Gran Turismo combines the total power output of 380 hp (279 kW) with a claimed best case consumption of only 6.8 l per 100 km of fuel. That equates to CO2 emissions of just 159 g/km. This puts the Panamera S Hybrid ahead of other full hybrid production vehicles in the luxury class, when it comes to fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Michelin’s even lower rolling resistance all-season tyres developed specially for the Panamera and available as an option help it achieve these figures. The Panamera S Hybrid accelerates from a standing start to 100 kph (62 mph) in 6.0 seconds, reaching top speed at 270 kph (168 mph). The range in purely electric mode is approximately two kilometres (1.24 miles) with electric driving possible up to 85 kph (53 mph), depending on the driving situation. The Porsche hybrid drive is also the only system in the world able … [Read more...] about Panamera S Hybrid at Geneva Motor Show
TTAC was all set to depart for Switzerland to cover the 82nd Geneva Motor Show when tragedy befell us. My usual suite at the Hotel d’Angleterre (with a view of Lac Léman) was occupied by one B. McAleer during press days, and upon arriving at the airport, our corporate-owned Falcon 7X was padlocked, the plane saddled with a lien from a Columbus-area guitar dealer alleging non-payment by an employee of our fair publication. Nevertheless, we will be covering the show somehow. Here’s what to expect from all the big players.Audi: The four-ringer brand will have a number of debuts at Geneva, and all of them will be locked to keep out the tract-house dwelling riff-raff. On the performance end, an A1 Quattro, featuring all-wheel drive and Volkswagen’s venerable 2.0T engine will debut, but production will be limited to 333 units it’s supposed to have 250 horsepower and cost $71,000 USD, so it will never come to North America. Also expected to never make it … [Read more...] about 2012 Geneva Motor Show Preview

The Geneva Motor Show rolls out each year much like the Academy Awards — plenty of glitz and glamour, limited diversity, and most of the attendees are from the high end of the market. This year’s show has seen a lot of range-topping models and an underlying theme of reinvention, which isn’t surprising given the current state of flux in the automobile industry. Utility-minded body styles are continuing to draw buyers away from traditional coupes and sedans, while electricity continues to grow as an alternate propulsion form.Geneva also serves as a launching pad for vehicles bound for the New York International Auto Show, which takes place at the end of March. A Volkswagen you’ll probably never driveVolkswagen took this opportunity to introduce the Phideon, a prestige luxury sedan bound only for the Chinese market.Designed to be the best VW can offer, the sedan comes with standard all-wheel drive and is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter direct-injection V6, … [Read more...] about 2016 Geneva Motor Show – Only the Best and Brightest
