The Lexus LC 500h is certainly a sight to behold. Essentially the greener version of the V8-powered LC 500, the LC 500h features a unique transmission setup with a four-speed gearbox connected to a CVT with two electric motors. However, don’t giggle because there’s a good reason for it. In a report by Automotive News, Koji Sato, chief engineer for the LC 500h says the new design is to eliminate the ‘rubber band’ feel of conventional CVTs. Unsure what the ‘rubber band’ effect is? When you press on the accelerator hard, most CVTs increase the engine speed (revs) quickly and stay there, forcing the driver to wait while the car accelerates. This creates the droning sounds that CVT bashers dislike. That is what Lexus’ new transmission aims to eliminate. Here, the four-speed automatic modulates the CVT’s output and creates an intentionally perceived gearshift. Sato says that during acceleration, the new gearbox in the LC 500h simulates six … [Read more...] about Lexus LC 500h – why a four-speed auto/CVT combo?

[Read more...] about Lexus LC 500h dilengkapi dua kotak gear dalam satu sistem transmisi – hapus kelemahan kotak gear CVT
Lexus dazzled us earlier this year, when they unveiled the stunning LC 500 in flamboyant fashion at the North American International Auto Show. Just three months later, Lexus again threw a big party during the Geneva Motor Show, and showed off the hybrid version of its hot, red, and sexy coupe—the very blue, Lexus LC 500h. But much to our approval and disapproval, Lexus brought the LC 500h to the New York Auto Show, but didn’t do anything about it, except put it on a rotating stand. No press conference, no fancy lights, no confetti—nothing. Still, this has got to be the most gorgeous vehicle Lexus has ever designed, and I’m just grateful I’ve been able to photograph both versions of it. Enjoy the shots! … [Read more...] about Lexus LC 500h Makes Quiet North American Appearance
The 2018 Lexus LC 500h may still be a long way off, but the Lexus marketing campaign is already in full gear. Remember when that blue LC 500 was spied filming a commercial in Spain last month? Well, it looks like that was actually the LC 500h, as shown in the gorgeous introduction video below. The video accompanies the LC 500h’s big debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week. As you can see, not one word is spoken, as the beauty of the car and the setting (and perhaps the couple driving it) do most of the talking. The only words we get are in the form of text at the end, which reads: “The new Lexus LC 500h with Multistage Hybrid.” Obviously, the fact that Lexus specifically mentions the multistage hybrid, and nothing else, is significant. Indeed, after the design, it’s the second bullet-point on the debut press release. According to the release: In “M-Mode,” you can even initiate gear shifts, the first time that feature’s been offered for a … [Read more...] about Lexus LC 500h Is Ready for Its Close-Up
When your $100,000 coupe uses less gas than your neighbor’s Prius, you can’t help but laugh. I reviewed the 2018 Lexus LC 500h a little while ago, and while I loved the style, comfort, and handling, it left me lukewarm in regard to power and fuel economy. After all, what good is a hybrid if it doesn’t deliver hybrid-level fuel economy? On my last day of testing, after more than 500 miles of back-road bombing, morning commuting, and general usage, I decided it was time to see just how fuel-efficient this car could be if I really pushed it. I’ve actually been trained on how to drive efficiently by the man who invented the word “hypermiling” and I decided to put all those skills to use. If you have never hypermiled a car before, it becomes a game all on its own, and it takes incredible concentration and patience. Just like driving around a track, you have to constantly adjust everything from steering angle and throttle input to maximize your … [Read more...] about Lexus LC 500h Hypermiling Yields Astonishing Results
The Multi Stage Hybrid System found in the upcoming 2018 Lexus LC 500h is a revolutionary piece of technology. But don’t take my word for it. Take Lexus senior technical trainer Stefan Ramaekers’s words in the video below: “It’ll be a revolution in the way hybrids are received, and in the way we experience a hybrid drive.” Basically, the Multi Stage Hybrid System found in the futuristic, high-performance hybrid utilizes all the components of a normal hybrid powertrain — 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine, electric motor, lithium-ion battery– but adds to that a four-speed automatic gearbox mounted at the rear of the hybrid transmission. According to the video’s description: In other words, it’ll be a revolutionary ride, which even allows the driver to slip the car into “M” transmission mode and make gear changes quickly and responsively — the first Lexus hybrid to offer such a feature. Check out Ramakers fascinating … [Read more...] about Lexus LC 500h Isn’t Just Cutting Edge, It’s Revolutionary
There’s a first time for everything. The 2018 model year marks the first year of the Lexus LC line of coupes. The LC 500h is the first hybrid coupe in the Lexus portfolio. And this past weekend was the first time I drove the 2018 Lexus LC 500h. Lexus brought it out to the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) to have it compete in the Texas Auto Writers Association’s Texas Auto Roundup. The two-day event featured over 40 vehicles from a variety of manufacturers, all vying for various titles, including the top three of the competition: “Family Car of Texas,” “Performance Car of Texas,” and “Car of Texas” (the LC 500h went on to be named the top “Performance Coupe” of the contest). Predictably, the line for the LC was long. As irritating as it was to constantly find the LC unavailable when I wanted to drive it, I couldn’t begrudge my fellow automotive journalists for being drawn to it, if only on a visual level. Although … [Read more...] about Review: 2018 Lexus LC 500h at Circuit of the Americas
The 2018 Lexus LC 500h is down on power, but U.S. Route 129 ‘Tail of the Dragon’ is all about handling. If you read my review of the 2018 Lexus LC 500h, you know that I’m upset that the car doesn’t have more power or more fuel economy. But what happens when you remove horsepower from the equation? With more than 300 corners in just 11 miles, U.S. highway 129 is a road that rewards balance and poise over grunt. The “Tail of the Dragon” is a road where an S2000 with a good pilot will outrun any supercar you can think of. So, I figured it was the best place to see what the latest Lexus coupe was really made of. A quick introduction for those unfamiliar. U.S. 129 is a small road that runs between the border of Tennessee and North Carolina in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. It’s tight, technical, and dangerous. It also makes it the perfect location to test a car’s handling, and you’ll even see camouflaged manufacturer mules … [Read more...] about Can the 2018 Lexus LC 500h Dance with the ‘Dragon’?
We knew it would have the same gorgeous shape as its V-8-powered progenitor, and now we know what will power the upcoming Lexus LC 500h hybrid sports car. The car is the first use of a new Lexus Multi-Stage Hybrid powertrain, which is said to allow the LC 500h to sprint to 60 mph in under five seconds thanks, in part, to a somewhat unconventional driveline. The new hybrid system uses a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated for 295 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. It’s complemented by a 45-kw electric motor, fed from a rear-mounted lithium-ion battery pack, and both the engine and motor send power through a four-speed automatic transmission (no, that’s not a typo) to the rear wheels. Total system output is 354 hp, giving a claimed 0-to-60-mph run of under five seconds. That’s as compared to the regular LC 500’s 468-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 engine and ten-speed automatic transmission, which rocket the car to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. … [Read more...] about 2018 Lexus LC 500h Uses 3.5-liter V-6, Electric Motor for 354 HP
The Lexus LC 500 sports coupe that made a splash at the Detroit auto show will also make an appearance at the 2016 Geneva auto show in March. This time, however, it will be the LC 500h model with hybrid power under its long hood. The company promises the LC 500h will be faster, more fuel efficient, and will provide “enhanced driving pleasure” compared to the standard LC 500, which is already slated to boast 468 hp and a 0-to-60-mph time below 4.5 seconds. Where the standard 2018 Lexus LC 500 uses a 5.0-liter V-8 engine and ten-speed automatic transmission, the 500h version will have some combination of gasoline and electric drivetrains. It’s not yet clear what powertrain would be used. The Lexus LS 600h does use a 5.0-liter V-8 engine with its hybrid driveline, but as Lexus says the 500h will have a “next-generation… Multi-Stage” hybrid powertrain, there’s no guaranteed the LC’s setup will be related to the LS’s. It’s possible … [Read more...] about Lexus LC 500h Hybrid Coupe to Debut in Geneva
