We first brought you the new Volkswagen Polo GTI as part of our Geneva show coverage back in March, but Volkswagen has now confirmed that the car is definitely real and definitely returning to the European market later this year. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the new Polo GTI is that it’s more efficient that the outgoing car without sacrificing any power. Volkswagen’s 1.8-liter TSI turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine has been downsized to just 1.4 liters but maintains its output of 178 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. With the supercharger providing low-end power, all that twist is available at just 2000 RPM. Power meets the pavement through Volkswagen’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with its XDS limited-slip differential. Unlike the old model, though, the new Polo GTI doesn’t get 30 mpg on the European combined cycle and emit 0.67 pounds of CO2 every mile. No, the new Polo GTI gets 40 mpg on the combined cycle and emits just … [Read more...] about 2011 Volkswagen Polo GTI Officially Announced For European Market, No U.S. Plans

There are five versions and three packs, but we’ll kick off with the one that’ll make most sense to you. This is the brand new, sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo, and, in turn, the brand new Volkswagen Polo GTI. Three letters that will pique your interest. It’s the range-topper (unless VW is secretly planning a Polo R), and gets a slightly bigger engine than its predecessor. And more power. So there’s now a 2.0-litre turbo with 192bhp (compared to the outgoing GTI’s 1.8-litre unit and 187bhp), matched to your choice of six-speed manual (tick yes) or seven speed DSG (maybe, but probably no), driving the front wheels. There’s a standard ‘sport’ chassis, and an optional ‘sport select’ chassis (adaptive dampers), along with a specially designed GTI front bumper, GTI badges, optional LEDs, a roof spoiler (‘how’s it going, fellow kids?’), sill extensions and the classic GTI interior. You know, tartan … [Read more...] about It’s the new Volkswagen Polo GTI!
The all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI Mk6 has been unveiled, featuring brand new looks inside and out, fresh platform and engine, plus a host of advanced technologies. As usual, it forms the flagship model of the all-new Polo Mk6 range but with one big change – it’s five-door only now, as the three-door body style has been dropped altogether. While the new Ford Fiesta ST has gone down the downsized engine route with a 1.5 litre turbo three-pot, the Polo GTI Mk6 does the complete opposite. Out goes the 192 PS 1.8 litre turbocharged motor, replaced by a new 2.0 litre TSI engine with 200 PS. European markets get a choice between a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch DSG. No power figures have been revealed just yet. Sitting on a shortened MQB modular platform, the latest Polo GTI sports a brand new look, with a more sporty silhouette thanks to lower and longer body proportions. It’s now longer, wider and lower than the outgoing model, with its wheelbase getting a … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Polo GTI Mk6 gets 200 PS 2.0 TSI engine
This is the new Volkswagen Polo GTI’s meaner, harder brother, and it means business. It’s the sort of new kid that would push others off their chairs for no reason at lunch time. Then it would break the legs off the chairs for good measure and throw the uneaten lunch on the floor. This is a Polo you don’t want to mess with. We first brought you news of it last month. The four-wheel drive Polo GTI R5 hooligan has a confirmed 268bhp from its four-cylinder, turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, plus permanent four-wheel drive and a close-ratio five-speed sequential manual racing gearbox. It’s got real biceps for a car this small, with 295lb ft of torque bulging from its angry body panels. While the regular Polo GTI has a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, it only puffs out 197bhp. Mind you, that’s as much as a MkV Golf GTI had… The R5 weighs only 1320kg, which is heavy next to a certain classic Porsche build we brought you earlier in the week, but is quite light … [Read more...] about This Is The Volkswagen Polo GTI’s Meaner, Angrier Brother
UPDATE: Volkswagen Polo GTI launched in Sepang – read our full launch story. It looks like the Volkswagen Polo GTI is already in Malaysia, so I suppose we can expect a launch very very soon. This Polo GTI with its protective layers still unremoved was snapped at Volkswagen Jalan Ipoh by reader Mansor J, who uploaded it onto our Facebook fan page. This new high-performance version of the Volkswagen Polo has a twin-charged (supercharger + turbocharger) 1.4 litre TSI inline-4 engine under its hood which is able to crank out 178 horsepower at 6,200 revs and 249Nm of torque from as low as 2,000 revs. It’s mated to a 7-speed twin clutch DSG gearbox. Wonder how much the Polo GTI will be priced at? The last generation Polo GTI was officially priced at RM138,888. Wonder if the new Polo GTI will receive a similar price tag. The current generation Polo 1.2 TSI goes for RM108,888. While you wait for the launch, we have some stories for you to catch up on – 1) Polo 1.2 TSI test … [Read more...] about New Volkswagen Polo GTI snapped at a VW dealership!
The Volkswagen Polo GTI was shown at the end of October last year at the Tokyo International Motor Show. I’ve posted about it before, but I thought it would be nice if I’d do another feature on it right after my post on the Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion. Kind of like two opposite ends of the Polo model range you know, one of them offers mega mileage and the other one offers you mega horsepower :) Volkswagen Polo GTI 1.8T Test Drive Review The Volkswagen Polo GTI pays tribute to the original 1986 Volkswagen Polo G40, the original performance Volkswagen Polo. It had a 115 horsepower 1.3 litre force inducted powerplant put down to the ground with the front wheels. 0-100km/h took 9 seconds and the little pocket rocket’s top speed was 195km/h. Pretty good for a 1.3 litre mini-car back in the 1980s. The new Volkswagen Polo GTI bears some similiarity to it’s older brother, the Volkswagen Golf GTI in terms of bodykit design. Under the hood is a 1.8 litre four-cylinder … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Polo GTI 1.8 Turbo
Volkswagen is promising a sharper and more agile driving experience from the new 197bhp and 147mph Polo GTI, compared with the more mature driving manners of the Golf GTI. “The Polo GTi is shorter, lighter and better to drive,” said Volkswagen’s small car line director, Ralf Kölling. “The Golf has performance more oriented to the highway, the Polo GTI is more agile for a really good drive. The shorter wheelbase than the Golf gives the Polo that extra feeling of agility." Volkswagen testing 300bhp Polo R prototypes Kölling and his team have been working on the Polo GTI for three-and-a-half years, helped by the green light from Volkswagen high-ups just six months after work began on the latest Polo. “We decided early in the project that we wanted a GTI version of the Polo and that has helped with having space under the bonnet for the bigger engine,” said Kölling. Power for the new Polo GTI comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged … [Read more...] about New Volkswagen Polo GTI ‘more agile’ than Golf GTI, plus exclusive images

Driving two spectacular 192PS hot hatches on a hilly road is bucket list stuff, and the run-up to this story has given me sleepless nights. What's been troubling me is the choice I'm forced to make – picking a winner between the Volkswagen Polo GTI and the Mini Cooper S. It's especially hard for me because ever since I drove the Mini about a year ago, I've been madly in love with it. It's the only car I've ever wanted this bad! Then Volkswagen went and launched the Polo GTI in India, and for the first time I reconsidered how I felt about the Mini. The Polo GTI is considerably cheaper, makes the exact same amount of power and wears the legendary GTI badge which certainly counts for something. To me, if the Polo GT was that impressive, the GTI had to be out of this world. But so is the Mini and there was only one way to settle this matter, once and for all. We drove the wheels off both cars on some of the nicest twisties we could find and then drove some more. But that only made the … [Read more...] about Comparo: 2016 Volkswagen Polo GTI vs Mini Cooper S
