The European Car of the Year 2016 shortlist is out. It’s an award that Autocar sponsors and on whose jury yours truly somehow landed a position last year. The process is a bit dull but might be worth noting. All eligible new cars make a longlist. To be eligible, they’ve got to be new this year and on sale in five European countries by a certain date, and although there’s no longer a limit on how many they sell (the minimum was 5000, but that ruled out cars like the BMW i8, so it was canned), a realistic number of judges have to have driven them. So no Ariel Nomad, tragically. Of the longlist, each of the 58 jury members nominates their preferred seven to go through to the shortlist. The ones with the most votes get on it, which is what we have now. Final judging will take place early next year and the winner will be announced in Geneva on the eve of the motor show in March. What’s noteworthy this year is that the shortlist is full of good cars. Yes, really. … [Read more...] about Matt Prior’s tester’s notes – is the Car of the Year 2016 shortlist any good?
Autocar Professional’s biggest edition of the year – the 12th Anniversary Special Issue (also apt to be called a collector's edition) – is out. The 184-page issue contains a comprehensive collection of original, thought-provoking articles, analysis and news features. Content which is 'essential reading for the automotive industry' in other words. What’s more, it is accompanied by two free goodies but more on that later. The cover story is on how Autocar Professional’s ‘Man of the Year 2016’ – Vinod Dasari, managing director of Ashok Leyland, scripted a turnaround at the commercial vehicle manufacturer and is driving new gains with an adroit mix of cost-cutting measures, divestments and enhanced efficiencies. Dasari, along with his team, has helped the company step up its game, whether it is developing India’s first Euro 6-compliant truck (the 4940) or the Hybus, the first non-plug-in hybrid bus in the country and designed for urban … [Read more...] about Ashok Leyland’s Vinod Dasari is Autocar Professional’s Man of the Year 2016
As 2016 opened to foggy skies in New Delhi, residents of the capital city have begun adhering to the implementation of the state government’s scheme of odd-even plying of cars from January 1-15. The scheme, aimed at cutting down the number of cars in the world’s most polluted city, restricts the use of cars bearing odd numbers to odd numbers dates and even-numbered cars on even dates. During this period, the rule will be in force from 8am to 8pm on all days, except Sundays. To enable improved transportation, the Delhi government has introduced an additional 3,000 buses and also said that metro services will run on higher frequency. The Delhi government has also issued two helplines – 011-42400400 and 011-41400400 – for people to register complaints. At 2pm today, the Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was seen on a television channel saying that he has been “overwhelmed by the response of Delhi’s people. They are doing this from their hearts and … [Read more...] about New Year in Delhi opens to odd-even traffic scheme
In today's business world, age and experience are no assurance of sustainability or growth. A young start-up can become the toast of the community or a well-established organisation's future could be at risk. Ashok Leyland is one such well-established company which reached almost the nadir and is on the comeback trail now. The managing director of Ashok Leyland surely has had the challenge of his career in leading the transformation of this 68-year-old company for the new age, earning Autocar Professional's 'Man of the Year' title. The year 2016 has seen quite a few developments that made news which impacted the automotive industry too. Donald Trump's election to the office of the president of the US could be one, but we are not talking about it now. Otherwise the challenge of meeting BS VI emission norms by 2020, thrown to the industry by the government at the beginning of the year, tops the list. Then there were some regional and global developments such as the odd-even rule, the … [Read more...] about Autocar Professional’s Man of the Year 2016: Vinod Dasari, MD, Ashok Leyland
Several car manufacturers have announced a price hike starting from the new year 2016, a move which also helps clear the previous year’s stock. 2015 has come to an end to make way for a new year. But 2016 is not going to be a good year for new car buyers. Several car manufacturers have announced a price hike across their product range starting with the New Year. The list includes manufacturers from Maruti Suzuki to Mercedes-Benz. This hike is aimed at setting off the rising input costs. Weak Rupee against Dollar is another reason behind the price hike. The fluctuations in overall foreign exchange have further contributed to the price hike. These are of course the reasons car makers would want everyone to believe. This kind of price hikes is usually seen during this time of the year. Experts claim that this is a method followed by manufacturers to settle the heavy discounts offered during the festive season. Also an increase in new year car prices results in easier stock … [Read more...] about Like Always, Cars Get Costlier From The New Year
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.Over a five-year period measured by the organization's researchers, 54 percent of the January 1 deaths were related to drunk driving. As a percentage, that's the highest of any day on the calendar, surpassing the 42 percent of fatalities historically caused by drunks on July 4. On average, drunk drivers are involved in 31 percent of all traffic fatalities, per the latest federal statistics released last month.More or less, that percentage has remained unchanged for more than a decade. Drunk driving deaths have accounted for roughly a third of all traffic deaths since the mid-1990s. They fell 1.1 percent in 2014, but nonetheless claimed 9,967 lives. More than two-thirds of those deaths occurred in crashes in which at least one driver had a blood alcohol concentration of .15 – double the legal limit, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Earlier this month, NHTSA unveiled a new slate of public-service announcements … [Read more...] about No surprise, New Year’s brings out drunk drivers like no other day
