What made it "cool" to you and to passers by? Tell us about your coolest past and present rides and your experiences with them in our comments section below! … [Read more...] about Thread of the Day: What’s the coolest car you ever owned?
The coolest cars
Making its way around the MT Forums today was a Thread of the Day penned by jrparnell77 who asks: What do you think was the coolest car built the year you were born? Author jparnell77 mentions his coolest ride as the 1977 Chevrolet Camaro in what we’re guessing to be in full Z28 garb. Featuring a 350ci V-8 with afour-barrel carburetor and Borg-Warner Super T-10 four-speed transmission, the 185 horsepower Z28 surely gave some Corvettes and Trans Ams runs for their money. Feel free to list a few of your favorite cars sharing your birth year in our comments section below. … [Read more...] about Thread of the Day: What were the coolest cars built in your birth year?
The saying, “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence,” often applies when you’re talking about cars. We probably all remember our Top Ramen-eating college days driving the hand-me-down family wagon, looking wistfully at a new Mustang GT or BMW M3. Maybe you’re at the point in your life where you are “that other guy” and finally own the dream car you always wanted. Either way, chances are, there’s a rare, unusual, or desirable car that prowls the streets of your neighborhood. Is there a certain car that you always see cruise up and down your street that you can’t help but just drool over? Maybe you’re always staring in the distance at your neighbor working on a classic or truck that you just wish was yours? Or do you peek out the window to catch a glimpse of your neighbor’s exotic every time you hear it purr down the street? For our TOTD, QRK5001 asks, what’s the coolest car your neighbor owns? … [Read more...] about Thread of the Day: What Are the Coolest Cars Your Neighbors Drive?
While most of my colleagues were out today looking at expensive cars parked on expensive lawns, I went on over to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to check out qualifying for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Not only were these multi-million dollar cars being driven in anger, but they were being pushed to the limits during practice and qualifying sessions. Frankly, there’s nothing more satisfying than watching priceless classic racecars being driven as their creators intended. The field was diverse, containing everything from a 1924 Duesenberg, to a John Player Special Formula 1 car, to a Paul Newman-owned Oldsmobile race car. Here are a few of the coolest cars I saw today at the track. … [Read more...] about 10 of the Coolest Cars from the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
After a 14-month, multimillion-dollar redesign that included shrouding the exterior with ribbons of stainless steel and rebuilding 95,000 square feet of exhibition space inside, L.A.’s famed Petersen Automotive Museum has reopened its doors to reveal a breathtaking new collection of cars and motorcycles. The quality and diversity of the vehicles chosen for the opening support chairman Peter Mullin’s desire to make the Petersen one of the world’s greatest automotive museums. Here are some of the highlights. Curated by L.A. car collector and Petersen Automotive Museum benefactor Bruce Meyer, the “Precious Metal” exhibit features a mouthwatering collection of exotic cars, all painted silver. In the foreground is the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 grand prix car fitted with the streamliner body used on high-speed tracks like Monza. Immediately behind it is the 1959 Sting Ray concept designed by legendary GM design boss Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda that previewed … [Read more...] about The Coolest Cars of the New Petersen Automotive Museum
No doubt we get to drive some pretty cool cars working at Motor Trend. We’re not even a full month into 2014 and already we’ve driven things like the Nissan IDx concept, the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte, and the BMW M235i. While that’s all well and good, what we care most about today are the cool cars you guys get to drive. For today’s Thread of the Day ChaiLatte kicks us off by bragging about the new Porsche Cayenne GTS he just drove, “The Cayenne was just bonkers,” he wrote, “The exhaust was intoxicating.” Hangerchief one-ups him (and all of us, really) by bragging a bit about the twin-turbo Ford GT he took out for a spin on a closed runway. Kcconnolly’s coolest was the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, “Back when I thought I wanted to be a part of the auto industry and not just sit back and enjoy it, I interned for the old GM in a test group and got to do repeated quarter miles in a Corvette ZR1 with a full roll cage,” he … [Read more...] about TOTD: What’s The Coolest Car You’ve Ever Driven?
In 1986, Merc’s AMG loons decided that outfitting a 300E with a 6.0-litre V8 engine and giving it a subtle bodykit, menacing alloys and a dollop of power was a recipe for success. In 1986, Merc’s AMG loons were right: the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE 6.0 AMG was a classic right from the start, marrying up a suitably herculean drivetrain to an everlasting silhouette. So weighty was its performance, that it was colloquially referred to by an instrument dear to the heart of any TG staffer: ‘The Hammer’. Before we get to the meat of the query then, let us remind you of the magnificence of The Hammer. It is picture number one, above. Glorious, right? This, along with a few other classic Mercedes-Benz models, will be taking part in the Silvretta Classic Rally Montafon, between 6-9 July. But The Hammer got us thinking. It’s an achingly cool name for a performance car, and joins a long list of cool names for other performance cars. Which is … [Read more...] about What’s the coolest car nickname you’ve ever heard?

In the TG office, there was much exchanging of insults, but we did manage to come up with our definitive top ten. We also spoke to the new face of TGTV, Chris Evans, who whittled down his dream garage to just ten. Our followers on TopGear.com also voted to give us their top ten. Unsurprisingly no one seemed to agree on … [Read more...] about New Top Gear magazine names the coolest cars ever
What if you learned that there was a car that debuted in the 1960s with front-wheel drive, a supercharged V-8, chrome-plated side-exhaust pipes, hidden headlights, and a disappearing convertible top?And what if you then learned that this car in fact was introduced not in the 1960s, but a full three decades earlier, in the 1930s? We’re referring here to the revolutionary Cord. No, not a Ford—or an Accord—but a Cord: quite possibly the coolest car you’ve never heard of. And it all began 85 years ago, in the town of Auburn, Indiana, about 140 miles northeast of Indianapolis…As 1929 approached, things were looking good for Errett Lobban Cord and the empire he had created. The portfolio of his Cord Corporation included flashy Auburn automobiles, Lycoming engines, Stinson aircraft, Checker taxicabs, and even the mighty Duesenberg among its offerings, but Cord was an auto manufacturer without a namesake marque. He rectified the situation in June 1929 with the … [Read more...] about A Brief History of the Cord Automobile: The Coolest Car You Never Knew Existed
