Yesterday, we reported that an early copy of the Japanese magazine Best Car may have leaked details of the new Toyota Supra before its official debut. We’ve already seen our fair share of lightly camouflaged Supra prototypes, including the new spy shot above, so when Toyota finally reveals the new car, the design won’t be much of a surprise. But despite Toyota’s official teaser suggesting the reveal will be in a few weeks, it may be a little more complicated than that.According to translations sent in by several readers (and one editor’s mother), Toyota only plans to show off a GTE-class racing version of the Supra at the Geneva Motor Show. The road car, on the other hand, won’t debut until the New York auto show at the end of next month. This, of course, depends entirely on Best Car‘s information being accurate, but SupraMKV forum staff seem to believe it is.For fans anxious to see the new Supra’s interior, … [Read more...] about The Toyota Supra Road Car Probably Won’t Be at Geneva

Tokyo Auto Salon, an auction house called BH Auction will offer a modified 1994 Toyota Supra. It's no ordinary modded Supra, though, it's a famous gold-colored Supra from Japanese tuning company Top Secret, and its claims to fame are incredible speed and a V12 under the hood.Yes the number of cylinders under the hood of this Supra has doubled, and it isn't a V12 from Ferrari or Aston Martin. It's a 5.0-liter V12 developed by Toyota and used in the old Toyota Century, the company's Japan-only luxury sedan. Top Secret didn't stop there, having added a pair of turbochargers, a nitrous oxide system and stronger engine internals. In total, the car has 930 horsepower and 745 pound-feet of torque, all of which goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Besides the powertrain upgrades, the car received a body kit that makes it hard to recognize the car as a Supra from the front, but the greenhouse and taillights are dead giveaways. The powertrain in this Supra alone makes it … [Read more...] about Top Secret’s V12-swapped, 222 mph Toyota Supra up for auction
Toyota pulled the first surprise of the Detroit Motor Show by unwrapping the FT-1. It’s a serious high-end sports car. Beautiful too. Unfortunately it’s only a concept and they’re being a bit cagey about whether it will go into production. On the other hand they have made a virtual FT-1 too, and from tomorrow you can download and drive it on Gran Turismo 6. It was designed at Toyota’s California Studio, Calty. Calty President Kevin Hunter says the FT in its name simply stands for ‘future Toyota’. It’s the same message as the company was giving out at November’s Tokyo Show: we don’t just do appliance-cars now. Hunter says the company used to be very conservative about moving on from a successful (if dull) formula. Now the top management in Japan want cars that excite the fizz. The FT-1 is the current state of that art. “It’s a sexy halo sports car, period.” says Hunter. At the same time as the … [Read more...] about Could this be the new Toyota Supra?
As the debut of the all-new Toyota Supra draws nearer, the test mules that are out in the wild are shedding their disguises and giving us a better idea of how the car will look. The latest development? That concerns headlights, as a prototype has been spotted wearing production clusters for the first time. As we can see from some detailed snaps over at SupraMkV.com, they look to be snazzy LED units, and echo the design of the FT-1 concept’s front headlights (below). However, that’s not the only interesting nugget of news found over on the MkV Supra portal - thanks to a leaked BMW model codes document, we now know how powerful it’ll be. Both the new BMW Z4 (code G29) and the new Supra (code J29) are listed on the document, with the Supra getting two choices of engine: ‘30i’ and ‘40i’. In BMW engine speak, that’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, and a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six. The current iterations of each produce 248bhp … [Read more...] about LED Headlights For ‘330bhp’ Toyota Supra Revealed
If you’re a car person, you’ll most likely recognise this orange 1993 Toyota Supra Mk4. Yep, it’s the one the late Paul Walker championed in the original The Fast and the Furious movie in 2001. Oh yes, that film aired that long ago – you can go ahead and feel old now. This very car went on sale at Mecum Auctions in the US recently, and someone paid a handsome fee to own Brian O’Connor’s so-called “ten-second car.” How handsome, we hear you ask? About US$185,000 (RM669k) – enough to buy a brand new Porsche 911 Turbo S in the land of the free. Instead of the top-of-the-range 911’s 560 hp however, the Supra’s stock-standard 3.0 litre inline-six engine makes just 220 hp, paired to a five-speed manual transmission. And as was portrayed in the film, there’s a twin Holley Performance nitrous oxide bottles mounted in the rear compartment, but it’s not actually attached to the engine. It’s all show but no go, … [Read more...] about Paul Walker’s 1993 Toyota Supra Mk4 from the original movie sold for US$185k (RM669k)
Nissan GT-R What We Know Details about the second-generation version of today’s Nissan GT-R are swirling, courtesy of two major players with close ties to Japan’s next supercar. First, Nissan’s design director, Shiro Nakamura, confirmed at a media event in Britain that the next version of the fast but slow-selling supercar from Japan will remain a front-engine 2+2 coupe with all-wheel drive. Yet he also told GT-R loyalists not to get their hopes up about the car adopting the styling cues of the Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo, created by Nissan for the most recent version of the “Gran Turismo” video game. Meanwhile, race-car designer Ben Bowlby, the man behind the DeltaWing and Nissan ZEOD R/C, confirmed that the next road-going GT-R will feature a version of the same twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6 with hybrid power that propels the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO race car, which appeared in June’s 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. This means the standard street … [Read more...] about Future Japanese Sports Cars: Nissan GT-R, Lexus SC, and Toyota Supra
Think you understand the fourth-generation Toyota Supra, sold in the U.S. from 1993-1998? Think again. Here’s everything you need to know about the Japanese performance car. History You’ve got to refer back to the late ’70s when the Supra spun off as a slightly sexier version of Toyota’s second-generation Celica coupe to know its origin. Celica Supras had longer wheelbases, were wider, and had more powerful six-cylinder engines, but aside from that, the Supra name didn’t hold the same sort of cachet that it does today. In ’86, Toyota wholly separated the Supra from the Celica, but it wasn’t until the fourth-generation model that it entered the world of Japanese supercardom. Blame the MKIV Supra’s 2JZ-GTE engine and six-speed Getrag gearbox for that—an inline-six so seemingly indestructible and so ready to make mad-scientist levels of horsepower that, even today, it remains one of the most popular engines of all time for pro … [Read more...] about Throwback Thursday: The 1993-1998 Toyota Supra
auction put on by Barrett-Jackson, RM, or Mecum, and you'll see someone's "dream car" sold about every two minutes. Playing in the big leagues often nets you the most rare, most desirable, and best-condition cars that money can buy. Deals can be had at auctions of course, but it's a system that seem best suited to delivering high-value vehicles to high-dollar buyers.Meanwhile, eBay is a bit more egalitarian. Dealerships have long since caught on to using the listing site as a marketing tool, but real-person owners transact with real-person buyers everyday.I'm an inveterate eBay browser, as are many of my fellow editors. What better way to pass the time while eating lunch than to check out prices of twin-turbo Supras, right? With that mindset, I polled the Autoblog team about which cars they dreamed about when they were young (and some slightly older), and set about figuring some average eBay-based values. Using recent data for completed auctions, looking at both sold and unsold cars … [Read more...] about How much does my dream car cost on eBay?
Toyota Supra is nearing its return for 2019, and new renderings show off the sports car's attractive styling. Enthusiast forum SupraMKV.com imagined the next-generation coupe sans the camouflage worn by tests mules in spy photographs. Freed from those black and white curlicues, the website illustrates the Supra's proportions and curves. The forum's renderings highlight the parallels between the Supra and the FT-1 concept, which suggested in 2014 that Toyota was serious about reprising its iconic sports car. Up front, we see wide headlights, a pointed nose, and side strakes that frame the face of the car and likely aid aerodynamics. In back are taillights and aero that also echo the FT-1. While these features are not obvious in spy shots, SupraMKV.com suggests the final production model will look much like the concept car. We're inclined to agree. The Supra is being developed with BMW as part of a sports-car partnership that will also spawn the Z4 successor, expected to be called the Z5. … [Read more...] about 2019 Toyota Supra stays true to the FT-1’s promise
From the April 1987 Issue of Car and Driver TESTED A car has to have the goods before it can play in the sports-coupe major leagues. The combatants in this arena include such potent performers as the Corvette, the Porsche 944 Turbo, the Mazda RX-7 Turbo, and the Camaro IROC-Z—cars fully equipped to devour any competitor that dares to enter the field of battle unprepared. In this fiercely contested market segment, superlative performance is essential to survival. When Toyota introduced its redesigned Supra last year, it wasn't ready to face such strong competition. We gave the new Supra a thorough shakedown (C/D, March 1986), and although we were pleased with its poised handling and high level of refinement, we were less than enthusiastic about its prodigious weight. The new Supra could hold its own against some of the competition, but it was easily trounced by the big boys. Fortunately, Toyota is not known for being content with playing on the … [Read more...] about 1987 Toyota Supra Turbo
