Here’s an interview with Toyota’s technical director of engines on the 2006 V8 engine which the team tested recently. The engine is expected to produce about 730-760 horsepower which is about 80% of the best V10 engines of the 2005 series. The engine will rev higher than the V10s currently. How long have you been working on the new Toyota V8 engine? “It took around eight months to have the first V8 prototype ready and the engine was first fired up on the test bench on March 21. I don’t normally remember those things but it was the first day of Spring, and a new dawn for us as well!” Is it difficult to run parallel V10 and V8 development programmes? “We had no choice. The 2005 rules say that we have to run a V10 but from March 2006 we have to race with a 2.4-litre V8. Obviously the winter off-season does not give sufficient time to develop a new engine and so we have to do the two programmes in parallel. Fortunately the engine department has the … [Read more...] about Toyota V8 Power!

The Maserati Biturbo has a strange place in history. It’s the first production road car with standard twin-turbos. The 2.0-liter V6 used a Weber carburetor, had three valves per cylinder, and didn’t even have an intercooler. Package that with low weight, sharp styling, and a luxurious interior, and you had an attractive, fast, and practical Italian four-seater coupe. But there’s another major key to automotive ownership that can ruin everything: reliability. It’s no secret that Italian cars in general, and Maseratis in particular, have a rocky history, but the early Biturbos were an entirely different animal with the unrefined twin-turbo setup. Electrical problems were frequent, they overheated, the carb constantly needed adjustment, the turbos blew, and some of them even caught on fire. Time listed the car among the all-time worsts. But not all people gave up hope on the car. Reportedly only about 5,000 Biturbos were sold/released in the U.S., but … [Read more...] about Wild Maserati Biturbo With the Beating Heart of a Lexus V8
Lotus is planning to power the new Esprit with its own design for a V8 engine, company boss Dany Bahar has revealed to Autocar. The company is currently doing a feasibility on the possibility of an all-new, Hethel-engineered V8 which would appear in the 2012 Esprit and a V6 for the new Elan and other models he admitted. “We have done three engines for other manufacturers; why not do it ourselves?” he said. “The engine is the heart of a sports car; we should do our own product.” See pics of all five of the new Lotus sports car concepts Bahar admitted that despite the high investment costs of developing two new engines it could end up paying dividends with future cost savings brought about through commonality of parts. Lotus engineering chief Wolf Zimmerman also revealed that the planned three-strong family of mid-engined Lotuses that will start with the Esprit will share a common platform, brakes, suspension and electrical systems. If you were one of the lucky few to attend this year’s Special Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, you might have seen what appeared to be a bone-stock 2015 Toyota Camry XSE proudly displayed at the Toyota booth. 2015 Toyota Camry: Build & Price » Wearing the updated 2015 car’s sharper bodywork with attractive 10-spoke wheels, it’s a good-looking family sedan, but SEMA is all about pushing the envelope to the extreme of show-and-go, right? This, friends, is not just any Camry. While the Sleeper Camry – yes, that is its official title – may look just like the best-selling midsize, lying beneath is actually a purpose-built and NHRA-certified tubular frame dragster capable of sub-10-second ¼-mile runs. Built in-house by Toyota Racing, it is the very definition of “sleeper,” or a car that looks ho-hum from the outside… right before it blows the doors off your Corvette Z06. Best Midsize Sedans » … [Read more...] about 2015 Toyota Camry: 5.7 V8, 700 Horsepower
Lotus has perplexed and antagonized a number of auto enthusiasts by announcing its intent to expand beyond niche sportscars and become a global sport-luxe brand in the vein of Porsche and Ferrari. By announcing five future cars at once, Lotus made an audacious splash in the industry, and painted a giant target on its back. At the same time, Lotus’s initial plans called for the use of Toyota V8s and hybrid systems, leading some to wonder if Lotus was even being audacious enough. After all, assuming it could play with Porsche’s and Ferraris using only mass-market customer engines was somehow cravenly conservative to the point of being obnoxiously ballsy. Surely Lotus realizes that bespoke drivetrains are crucial to building a global sportscar brand? Well, apparently the Hethel boys didn’t get it… at least until their potential customers made an issue of it.Lotus CEO Dany Bahar tells Autocar that, after talking the issue over with prospective clients, he came to … [Read more...] about Under Customer Pressure, Lotus Backs Away From Toyota Engines
Heads of state and other dignitaries typically like to ride around in large, sedan-shaped vehicles. Offerings like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and contemporary Rolls-Royce sedans have long been the go-to around the world. Of course, there are exceptions. For places like the United States, national pride dictates an American-made Cadillac or Lincoln. The Japanese also have a strong sense of national pride, and for decades there was only one vehicle appropriate for heads of state and CEOs — the Toyota Century. Now it’s gone. This isn’t the first time we’ve featured a Toyota in the Rare Rides series, nor is it our first limousine. But this Century is on the opposite end of the spectrum from the MEGA CRUISER or the ZIL. I don’t think its owners would’ve approved of such capital letter usage, as it’s too vulgar. The Century was the flagship of the Toyota line, and has been since since its inception. It was always designed as a dignified, … [Read more...] about Rare Rides: In Memoriam, Toyota Century
Do you yearn to feel your truck lunge forward under moderate throttle, the hood heaving up before you? Do you ache for that gentle linear pre-runner sway into every corner? Does your current rig sport a sticker with Calvin maliciously relieving himself on a Blue Oval? If so, Dealer Services International’s Tundra Pro Runner may be the truck for you.The Raptor is said to have no real peers. And while that is strictly true, this Toyota makes a compelling argument to look hither. But it’s not the truck’s canyon-absorbing wheel travel, miraculous hydraulic bump stops, or bad-ass 18-inch black aluminum wheels in 35-inch rubber that make this Tundra exceptional. What makes this a viable Raptor alternative is that you can buy one right off a Toyota showroom floor today. No lapse in warranty coverage, no payload penalty, and no need to max out your credit card for the modifications. The Pro Runner gives Raptor drivers more than one reason to check their rearview … [Read more...] about Toyota Tundra Pro Runner Off-Road Review – Japanese Raptor with a Warranty
It’s been said that with the last Crown Victoria produced, the death of Ford’s Panther platform represented the extinction of the species, American sedanus body-on-framus, the last of the dinosaurs. Keeping in a biological frame of mind, it seems to me that the BOF American sedan didn’t go extinct, but transformed. Its trunk developed into an open cargo bed and those varieties with high ground clearance seem to have been particularly adaptive. That’s the closest analogy I can come up with to describe how the 2014 Toyota Tundra CrewMax Plantinum drives – it reminds me of the big American cars that were on the road when I got my driver’s license back in the early 1970s, and it should. It has body-on-frame construction, double A arm suspension up front, a live axle on leaf springs in the back, seats as flat as a sofa, and a powerful V8 engine up front, just like those old land yachts of yore. Oh, and it’s big.Actually, that comparison somewhat … [Read more...] about 2014 Toyota Tundra CrewMax Platinum 4X4 Review
Toyota announced its updated Land Cruiser in Japan today, with a starting price of $38,000 (!?) for the off-roading legend. The seven-seater over there serves as the base for our Lexus LX over here, which was unveiled over the weekend in California alongside the turbo’d Lexus GS, and our version has all the grille.Based on initial reception of the LX, when will we get the new Land Cruiser?According to a Toyota spokesman, the automaker has “something” to tell us about the Land Cruiser tomorrow.According to Toyota in Japan, the Land Cruiser 200 received a mild upgrade over the last generation. Although their prices are much lower than our $80,000 truck, the Land Cruiser in Japan is fitted with a smaller 4.6-liter V-8, instead of the 5.7-liter V8 found here in the States, which partially accounts for the price difference. Both SUVs are extremely small volume cars for Toyota so changes are usually made globally. So those of you (all 200 a month) who want to spend … [Read more...] about Japan Gets a New Toyota Land Cruiser, Ours May Come Soon
